Eleanor Buskell was one of the first people to buy a home through the Attainable Home Ownership Program. It was 2011 when she saw an ad for the program - a moment she says changed her life for the better.

“The experience with the Attainable Home Ownership Program was great,” says Eleanor. “The help from banks to lawyers and the staff at AHCC was excellent. It was a smooth and easy process.”

Eleanor bought a townhouse in Deer View Village that was renovated by Cidex Developments, complete with new appliances, plumbing fixtures, cabinet doors, carpet and linoleum, wood trim and paint. It also came with a fenced backyard and a dedicated parking stall.

The location within a well-established neighbourhood and close proximity to a range of stores and amenities were key features for Eleanor.

“What I love most about having my home is that it is mine. I am able to decorate and look after it my way.”

Prior to buying her attainable home, Eleanor rented a condo which actually had higher monthly costs compared to her current mortgage.

“My attainable home is much more affordable and has lower monthly costs, including all utilities,” says Eleanor. “The condo I rented was lovely, but this is my own home. It’s so much nicer.”

“It has given me a sense of belonging. It has improved my quality of life. I can look ahead and dream of more. This has been a gift for me.”

Eleanor is still happily living in her attainable home and has no plans to re-sell it in the immediate future.

Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation (AHCC) is a nonprofit social enterprise and wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary that delivers well-appointed, entry-level homes for Calgarians who have been caught in the city’s growing housing affordability gap.

Through our Attainable Home Ownership Program, we connect builders, developers, lenders, lawyers and others to bring down the upfront costs of ownership so qualifying Calgarians can buy their very own home with a $2,000 down payment. Furthermore, when you decide to buy an attainable home, you're also choosing to pay it forward to help another family in the future. When you eventually decide to refinance or sell your home on the market, a share of the appreciation goes back into the program to fund more developments that will help even more people get a foot on the property ladder.

Do you aspire to own a home of your own? Contact us today and let us show you just how attainable this milestone can be.
