Amanda's Story

Amanda Mercer was able to buy a brand new townhouse in the same neighbourhood she was renting in, which meant her daughters could stay in the same school they had always attended.

Being a single parent, Amanda had no expectations of owning a home in the near future. But Amanda’s outlook changed when she found the Attainable Home Ownership Program.

When sales launched for Origins at Cranston, Amanda put $2,000 down and qualified for a mortgage with payments that actually checked in lower than her former rent.

“Without a doubt for me, the best thing about the program was the down payment assistance,” says Amanda. “The biggest obstacle is usually acquiring the down payment on a home, and that was no different in my situation.”

She bought a two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse with an undeveloped basement. The size of the unit and the location were key for Amanda. It also offered more financial security for herself and her children.

“I love the pride of owning my own home and knowing that the money I invest in it is building equity,” says Amanda.

In the living area, you can see how much Amanda loves her new home. A red feature wall and carefully coordinated chairs brighten the room, and thoughtful quotes embellish the walls. She truly has a talent in home decorating.

“I still sometimes catch myself feeling insanely proud of the house being mine and what I have accomplished, which truly would not have been possible without the assistance of AHCC.”

WE MAKE HOME OWNERSHIP HAPPEN

Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation (AHCC) is a nonprofit social enterprise and wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary that delivers well-appointed, entry-level homes for Calgarians who have been caught in the city’s growing housing affordability gap.

Through our Attainable Home Ownership Program, we connect builders, developers, lenders, lawyers and others to bring down the upfront costs of ownership so qualifying Calgarians can buy their very own home with a $2,000 down payment. Furthermore, when you decide to buy an attainable home, you're also choosing to pay it forward to help another family in the future. When you eventually decide to refinance or sell your home on the market, a share of the appreciation goes back into the program to fund more developments that will help even more people get a foot on the property ladder.

Do you aspire to own a home of your own? Contact us today and let us show you just how attainable this milestone can be.
