For Shane Normore, home ownership had always been a personal goal. He also felt that he and his son deserved a loving home of their own. However, as a single parent, Shane quickly found himself with too much month at the end of the money. He did his best to set funds aside for a down payment but as the years began to pass and his progress hit a standstill, Shane knew that if he wanted to move his family out of the rental market he needed to seek out some help.
After reaching year seven in his rental duplex in Queensland, Shane decided to take a closer look at what AHCC had to offer. “I knew of the program for a while and, when I found time to do some research, I liked what I saw and went for it.”
He began exploring the organization, booked his initial interview and was welcomed warmly by the team. After getting pre-approved for a mortgage, the day Shane had been waiting for had finally arrived.
“My favourite part of the whole thing was placing my little red sticker dot onto the building layout to signify that a particular unit, my unit, was SOLD!” At last, Shane and his son had a home of their own.
Today, thanks to AHCC, Shane is investing in his home located in 51 Oak, rather than someone else’s. Having spent so many years paying rent, Shane is grateful that AHCC was able to help his family make the transition to ownership.
“With the rising costs of housing, down payments are quickly becoming unrealistic for the average person,” Shane explains. “Without Attainable Homes it would have been several more years until I could afford to buy my own home, if ever.”
Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation is proud to give deserving Calgarians like Shane and his son the opportunity to move from rentals to ownership.
Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation (AHCC) is a nonprofit social enterprise and wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary that delivers well-appointed, entry-level homes for Calgarians who have been caught in the city’s growing housing affordability gap.
Through our Attainable Home Ownership Program, we connect builders, developers, lenders, lawyers and others to bring down the upfront costs of ownership so qualifying Calgarians can buy their very own home with a $2,000 down payment. Furthermore, when you decide to buy an attainable home, you're also choosing to pay it forward to help another family in the future. When you eventually decide to refinance or sell your home on the market, a share of the appreciation goes back into the program to fund more developments that will help even more people get a foot on the property ladder.
Do you aspire to own a home of your own? Contact us today and let us show you just how attainable this milestone can be.
